Welcome to the Rhode Island Health Information Management Association (RIHIMA), a non-profit organization, a component state association of the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). The association was founded in 1935 by a group of Medical Record Clerks working in local hospitals; their meetings gave the members an opportunity to exchange ideas pertaining to their work.

Today RIHIMA has approximately 100 active members with an additional 50 certified non-members.


Charles Underwood Memorial Scholarship
(bestowed to student(s) through the RIHIMA as a gift from Gorwood Business Services, Inc., P.O. Box 7577, 160 Bear Hill Road, Cumberland, Rhode Island, 02864): to be awarded to applicant(s) who is enrolled in a Health Information Management or Health Information Technology program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management (CAHIIM) OR in a master’s degree level program in health information management or health informatics OR must provide documentation of good faith in partaking of an education related to health information management. Consideration will be made regarding the applicant’s employer tuition reimbursement program. Application due: September 30th.


Criteria For Applicants

The scholarship recipient selection committee is empowered by the RIHIMA Board of Directors to choose dedicated students from among applicants who meet the following criteria.

  • * Reside and/or be employed in the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.
  • * Submit a statement of provisional acceptance from the college or university that he/she is attending.
  • * Deliver a completed application and five copies to the RIHIMA President who functions as Chairperson of the Scholarship Committee by September 30th.
  • * Include your statement of objectives in a cover letter. That is, why do you feel you should be considered to be a scholarship recipient?
  • * Obtain three letters of reference from persons not related to the applicant, but familiar with the applicant’s character, education, and abilities. The letters must be attached to the original application.
  • * Submit a signed statement stating eligibility for any other financial assistance (employer assistance, state aid, etc.) including association and amounts awarded.
